book review by Carolyn
The blue zones are places in the world where an exceptional number of people live healthy lives to very old age, often beyond 100. In The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest, Dan Buettner visits some of the healthiest places on the planet, where he interviews super-seniors to identify what contributes to their long, healthy lives.
This fascinating book reveals habits of healthy seniors in Italy, Costa Rica, Japan, and Loma Linda California in the US. Lifestyle habits of super-seniors include near-vegetarian diets, daily exercise, social connections, and a sense of purpose in living.
In one story, a 93-year old man in Loma Linda, California, constructed his own fence to save money. After heavy labor working on a steep hill, the next week found him in the operating room. But he wasn’t on the operating table, he was one of the surgeons!

Nurture your family ties. Be part of your family and your extended family on a daily basis by eating meals, playing games, and even working together.

Embrace your religion or spirituality practices. While doing so, you also create your immediate community of like-minded folks.
-
Be a valuable member of your family and community. Wake up every morning with a purpose by knowing you contribute to the well-being of others.
