I’d like to introduce a new workplace wellness podcast investigating work culture and how it coincides with a rising tide of overwhelmed and overworked people. Brigid Schulte author of “Overwhelmed” hosts the podcast Better Life Lab I The Art and Science of Living a Healthy Life.
If you love learning about workplace wellness like I do, you’ll enhance any laundry folding session with this enjoyable podcast.
Schulte interviews intriguing guests on the front lines of workplace wellness.
In “Even Progressive Offices Fail at Work-Life Balance” Schulte interview experts including David Wellman from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation and Dr. Jeff Feffer Director of Organizational Behavior at Stanford University.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation focuses on answering “What makes communities healthier?”
Even though the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation is a leading advocate for workplace wellness, close self-examination reveals over-work is a norm even within their own organization.
David Wellman, Vice President for Human Resources at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation observes, “Our workers care so deeply that they can work 100 miles an hour… You would think we’re working in an emergency room but we’re not.”
Dr. Jeff Feffer from the Department of Organizational Behavior at Stanford University explains the impact is akin to second hand smoke. Long work hours, absence of social support, and neglect of personal health lead to over 120,000 work related deaths annually.
One message is clear: companies who value their own long term viability also place value on the long term health of employees.
Brigid Schulte has a lovely voice and asks good questions. And if you agree with Schulte, that humans are at our best when we fold wellness into work, then this is a podcast for you.
I recommend listening to the full 26 minute podcast at one.npr.org You’ll gain a greater understanding of the complexities involved with organizational behavior change and gain insights from leaders in the field.
